What is a church graft?

A church graft is something old and something new. It’s old because there is already an existing congregation and building at St. Oswald’s.

It’s new because a group from All Saints Ecclesall and potentially some others from nearby churches will be joining them to form one church family, with Rev. Simon Oatridge as the Vicar.

Why a church graft to St. Oswald’s?

From the beginning, St. Oswald’s has shared close ties with All Saints Ecclesall. In the early 1900s, as Abbeydale rapidly expanded, it became difficult for All Saints clergy to serve the growing population. Through the generosity of a local family, land was donated and by 1910 a new church was built. Worship began with over 250 adults in the congregation and many children, with a vibrant Christian witness established in the community.

Over a century later, the church has continued, even as numbers have declined. In 2004 St. Peter’s Church, Abbeydale joined with St. Oswald’s, forming one congregation. Today, around 25 adults attend a traditional service each Sunday. Most are older in years, with few, if any, children present. For the church to continue, the Diocese and church recognised a new beginning is needed.

The congregation are grateful for the provision of a church graft from their neighbours at All Saints Ecclesall, and are full of hope for all that God will do to bring renewal and new life to the parish.

“We have prayed for God to send us someone who would bring young life to our church. It will be good to have more people to aid our worship and mission. Our prayers have been answered!”

Joan Wragg and Sally Wood, Lay Readers

“We are excited about the potential of the church graft to bring renewed energy, vision, and growth to our ministry and mission. This new season offers a unique opportunity to reach more people with the love of Jesus, deepen our discipleship, and serve our community.”

Stephen Williams and Stephen Pennells, Acting Church Wardens
